Frequently Asked Questions

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a unified indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India, replacing multiple taxes like VAT, service tax, and excise duty. It was introduced on 1st July 2017.
Under GST 2.0 (effective 22 September 2025), India moved to a simplified 3-slab structure: 5% (essential goods and mass consumption items), 18% (standard rate — most goods and services), and 40% (luxury and sin goods like tobacco, pan masala, luxury cars). The earlier 12% and 28% slabs have been merged into 5%/18% and a new 40% slab respectively.
For intra-state transactions, GST is split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For inter-state transactions, IGST (Integrated GST) = CGST + SGST is charged.
To find the base price from MRP: Base Price = MRP ÷ (1 + GST rate). E.g., MRP ₹118 at 18% GST → Base = ₹118 ÷ 1.18 = ₹100.
Items like fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs, bread, books, and healthcare services are exempt from GST (i.e., 0% GST).
Yes, businesses registered under GST can claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) on GST paid on purchases, which is then adjusted against GST collected on sales.
