Frequently Asked Questions

STT (Securities Transaction Tax) is a tax levied on every purchase or sale of securities like stocks, derivatives, and mutual funds. For delivery trades, STT is 0.1% on both buy and sell sides.
Flat-fee discount brokers like Zerodha and Upstox charge ₹20 per order or 0.03% (whichever is lower) for intraday trades, and zero brokerage for delivery trades.
Besides brokerage and STT, stock trades also incur exchange transaction charges (NSE/BSE), SEBI turnover fee, stamp duty, and GST on brokerage and transaction charges.
Net P&L = (Sell Price − Buy Price) × Quantity − Total Charges. Always check net P&L before trading as charges can significantly impact profitability on small price movements.
Intraday trading means buying and selling on the same day — lower STT (0.025%) and brokerage. Delivery trading means holding shares overnight or longer — higher STT (0.1%) but zero brokerage with many brokers.
Use flat-fee discount brokers, trade in larger quantities to spread fixed costs, prefer delivery over intraday when possible, and avoid excessive trading that piles up charges.
