Dhanteras falls on Friday, 6 November 2026, and the queues at jewellers will be long. This year they're buying at a very different price from a month ago. According to bullions.co.in rates reported by StartupTalky, 24K gold was ₹1,50,560 per 10 g on 3 October and ₹1,38,970 on 2 November. That's a 7.7% slide in a month. Silver fell harder, from ₹2,26,610 to ₹1,82,010 a kilo.
Gold is still about 14% above where it stood a year ago (₹1,21,660 on 2 November 2025). A dip, then, not a collapse. Whether it keeps falling is anyone's guess.
Is a falling price a reason to buy?
Not by itself. Gold moves with global interest rates, the dollar and the rupee. The festival calendar isn't one of its inputs. If you were going to buy anyway, a lower price helps. If you weren't, Dhanteras is a poor reason to start.
What actually costs or saves you money is the form you buy it in. So here's what each one really costs.
Jewellery: what the bill adds up to
Take 10 g of 22K jewellery. On 2 November, 22K gold was ₹1,27,389 per 10 g, about ₹12,739 a gram. Add a 12% making charge (an example figure; jewellers set their own and it changes with the design) and the bill looks like this:
- Gold value: ₹1,27,389
- Making charge at 12%: ₹15,287
- GST at 3% on the total: ₹4,280
- You pay: ₹1,46,956
That's ₹19,567 above the value of the gold, roughly 15%. When you sell the piece back, the jeweller pays for weight and purity. The making charge is not refunded. In this example gold would have to rise about 15% before you break even on resale. Buy jewellery to wear it.
Coins and bars
These carry a premium over the gold price too, but usually far smaller than jewellery making charges. Ask for the exact figure before you pay, and get a proper invoice and sealed packaging.
Gold ETFs: no making charge, no locker
A gold ETF trades on the stock exchange through your demat account. Its price follows gold, so there are no making charges and no worry about purity or storage. You do pay brokerage and the fund's annual expense, which are small next to a 12% making charge.
On tax, hold for more than 12 months and the gain is taxed at a flat 12.5% (plus cess). Sell earlier and it's added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. Physical gold needs more than 24 months to get the same 12.5%.
Sovereign Gold Bonds: mostly off the table
New SGB tranches were suspended in early 2024, and there's no sign they're coming back soon. You can still buy older bonds on the exchange, but as summarised after Budget 2026, the tax-free maturity gain from 1 April 2026 is meant for people who subscribed in the original issue and hold to maturity. Buy in the secondary market and your maturity gain is taxable. That removes the main reason to pick an SGB.
Digital gold: read this before the app offer
In November 2025, SEBI warned that some digital gold and e-gold products sold on online platforms operate outside its regulatory purview, so you don't get the protections that come with securities. It pointed to regulated routes instead: gold ETFs and Electronic Gold Receipts traded on exchanges. A festival cashback doesn't make up for a platform problem.
At the jeweller: five checks
- Hallmark. A BIS-hallmarked piece carries three marks: the BIS logo, a purity mark (916 for 22K, 750 for 18K) and a unique HUID code. Ask to see all three.
- The bill. It should show net weight, the gold rate used, making and wastage charges, and GST. Net weight leaves out stones.
- Buyback. Ask what the shop will pay when you bring the piece back, and confirm the making charge isn't coming back.
- Payment. Pay digitally. A jeweller can't accept cash of ₹2 lakh or more in one transaction, and larger purchases need your PAN.
- The rate. Check the day's 22K rate at two shops, and compare making-charge percentages too. They differ from shop to shop.
You don't have to spend big to keep the tradition
The custom is to buy something on Dhanteras. Panchang sources list gold or silver, even a small coin, alongside utensils. A 1-gram coin keeps the ritual. If the goal is building wealth, an ETF does that job better, and spreading purchases over a few weeks takes some of the price-guessing out.
The Trayodashi tithi runs from around mid-morning on 6 November to around mid-morning on 7 November, with exact timings shifting by city. Check your local panchang for the puja muhurat.
Run your numbers before you pay
Use the Gold Value Calculator with the weight and rate per gram, then add making charges and GST on top as in the example above. Already own gold and need cash instead of more gold? The Gold Loan Calculator shows how much you can borrow against it and the EMI.
